Which Study Abroad Intake Should You Choose? A Backward Timeline for Nepali Students

Quick Answer

The right intake is the first start date you can still reach after every step is done, so count backward from the start date instead of forward from today. The steps that set the clock are the English test, the NOC, funds held for the required period, the offer and enrolment document, and visa processing. For visa processing, Australia targets 1 to 12 weeks to start (by provider priority), the UK about 3 weeks, and Germany at least 3 to 4 weeks; verified 21 September 2026.

Last reviewed

Last verified: 21 September 2026. Visa rules and bank terms change, so each rule below names its source. Confirm the current position on the official page and with your bank before you rely on it.

Most Nepali families do not fund a student visa from one bank balance. The money comes from savings, a loan against land, a parent's income, sometimes a relative abroad. Each destination accepts some of these and not others, and each wants different paperwork. A plan that works for Canada can fail for the UK.

This guide takes each source of money and shows, from the official pages, how Australia, Canada, the UK and Germany treat it. It also explains how education loans from Nepali banks work in practice. Where an official page does not answer a question, we say so. For how much each country asks you to show, read our guide to proof of funds versus real cost.

Why the source of money matters as much as the amount

An officer does not only check that the number is large enough. They check who owns the money, how that person is related to you, how long it has been there, and whether the paperwork explains where it came from. The same NPR 30 lakh can be strong evidence for one country and weak evidence for another, depending on whose account it is in and what form it takes.

How education loans work in Nepal

We read the official education loan pages of two Nepali banks, NIC Asia Bank and Nabil Bank, on 21 September 2026. Other banks have their own terms, so treat these as examples and ask your own bank.

  • Collateral. NIC Asia's page says the loan is against land or land and building, or against a fixed deposit with the bank. Nabil's page lists land ownership documents, including the Lalpurja, property maps and tax clearance.

  • Amount. Both banks state loans of up to NPR 10 million. NIC Asia's minimum is NPR 0.3 million. NIC Asia lends up to 80 per cent of the fair market value of real estate, or up to 90 per cent of a fixed deposit's principal.

  • Repayment. Nabil states a moratorium of up to 4 years or the course duration, whichever is earlier, and repayment options of up to 20 years. NIC Asia offers monthly instalments, with interest-only payments during the moratorium if that option is chosen.

  • Documents. Both pages list a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Education for study abroad, and an offer letter from the institution.

We do not quote interest rates, because they change and differ by bank.

Two planning points follow. First, the loan depends on an offer letter and a NOC, so it cannot be finalised until both exist. If you want a loan, start the NOC as soon as you have a target institution. Second, NPR 10 million (100 lakh) is above the totals in the worked examples in our proof of funds guide, which ranged from about NPR 21 to 72 lakh. But that limit is a ceiling. What a bank actually lends depends on the value of your collateral and its margin.

Country by country

Australia

Full country guide: study in Australia from Nepal. For the application process itself, see our Australia student visa guide.

The Department of Home Affairs asks you to show one of two things. The first is sufficient funds to cover travel, tuition, living and school costs for the first 12 months. The second is annual income above a specified amount from your spouse or de facto partner, or from a parent or parents who are not travelling with you.

So in Australia's own wording, the income route names a spouse, partner or parent. It does not name an uncle, an older sibling or another relative. The Department says the categories of acceptable evidence are on its website. We could not read that detailed page in this research, and we could not confirm the current specified income amount. That means we cannot tell you whether a Nepali bank loan letter is accepted for Australia. Confirm this with the Department or your counsellor before you take the loan.

Canada

IRCC lists several forms of proof. Two matter here.

  • A student or education loan. IRCC lists proof of a student or education loan from a bank.

  • A letter from a person supporting you. The letter must state their employment or occupation (with an employer letter, pay stubs or similar), their relationship to you, the number of their dependants, and the amount of their support. You also give a copy of their photo identification or proof of their business registration.

If you use bank statements, IRCC asks for statements for the past 6 months, including the month you apply or the month before. They must include documents that show the source of the income, such as employment income or savings transfers. For a family that runs a business, a business registration and the paperwork behind large deposits become part of the evidence.

United Kingdom

Full country guide: study in the UK from Nepal.

GOV.UK lists what you can use to prove you have the money:

  • a student loan from a government, a government-sponsored loan company, or a regulated student loans scheme

  • official financial sponsorship, for example from a national government or a university

  • your own money

  • your parent's money, with a letter from them confirming they agree to you using it

  • your partner's money, if your partner is in the UK or applying at the same time

It also lists what you cannot use: overdrafts, cryptocurrency, stocks and shares, pensions, bank accounts not regulated by the financial regulator in the country where the bank operates, and accounts that do not use electronic record keeping.

What this means for a Nepali bank loan. The Home Office caseworker guidance names three kinds of accepted loan provider: a government, a government-sponsored student loan company, or an educational loans scheme from a financial institution regulated for student loans by the Financial Conduct Authority or the Prudential Regulation Authority. It does not name commercial banks in other countries. In our reading, a land-backed loan from a Nepali bank is therefore unlikely to count as a UK student loan, and the safer plan is to show the money in an account instead. We found no official statement that settles this, so ask before you rely on a loan. We also found nothing on whether loan money paid into your own account counts as your own money for the 28-day rule.

Parent's money. The account must be one your parent controls. You must also give written consent from your parent and proof of the relationship. The caseworker guidance lists a birth certificate, adoption certificate, court document or household register as examples. GOV.UK's list names parents and partners. It does not name other relatives.

Timing and format. You must have had the money for 28 days in a row. Bank statements, passbooks, certificates of deposit or letters from the bank can be used. The evidence must be from no more than 31 days before you apply, and must show your name, the bank's name and the balance. If the money is in a foreign currency, UKVI converts it using the OANDA spot rate for the date of the application. If some of your savings sit in a cooperative or any institution that is not a licensed bank, ask before counting on it, because GOV.UK excludes accounts not regulated in the country where the institution operates.

Germany

Full country guide: study in Germany from Nepal.

The Federal Foreign Office lists these ways to prove financing: your parents' income, a declaration of commitment under Articles 66 to 68 of the Residence Act by a person with sufficient assets or income, a blocked account, an annually renewable bank guarantee at a bank in Germany, or a scholarship. A bank education loan is not on that list.

The Kathmandu embassy's checklist accepts evidence such as a formal sponsorship letter from someone living in Germany, an employer letter with income and duration of employment, tax payment records, personal bank statements, land ownership certificates or company registration. The embassy also warns that one proof does not by itself guarantee the visa and more documents may be requested. The amounts are covered in our proof of funds guide.

Match your family's funding to the country

This table is our reading of the rules above, not an official ranking.

Your family's money looks like

Rules that fit it best

Savings in a bank account in your name or a parent's name

Canada (6 months of statements with income source), UK (28 days plus consent letter), Germany (blocked account or parental documents)

A loan against land

Canada lists a bank education loan. For the UK, GOV.UK names other loan providers, so plan to show cash instead. Check Australia and Germany before you borrow

A parent's steady income but little cash

Australia's income route, Germany's parental income documents

A relative or sponsor who is not a parent

Canada's letter of financial support, Germany's declaration of commitment. Not clearly available in the UK or Australia

Money in a cooperative, shares, a pension or crypto

Ask first. The UK excludes shares, pensions, crypto and unregulated accounts

The paper trail to build early

  • Relationship. Birth certificate or household register. The UK requires proof of relationship for a parent's money.

  • Consent. A signed letter from the parent whose account you are using, for the UK.

  • Income. Employer letter, pay stubs, tax payment records, or business registration, depending on how the money is earned (Canada, Germany).

  • Bank evidence. Statements for the period each country asks, and documents that explain any large deposit.

  • Loan. NOC, offer letter, land documents and the bank's sanction letter.

Whoever is funding the study, the documents should tell one story: who they are, how they are related to you, where the money comes from and how much they are committing.

Five mistakes to avoid

  1. Taking the loan before checking the country's rule. A loan that works for Canada may not work for the UK.

  2. Assuming a loan letter works everywhere. The UK accepts only certain loan providers.

  3. Using a relative's money for a country that names only parents. The UK and Australia name parents, spouses and partners, not uncles.

  4. A large deposit with no paper trail. Canada asks for documents that show the source of income.

  5. Starting the NOC late. Both banks we read list the NOC among their documents, so a late NOC delays the loan and everything after it.

What to do this week

  1. Write down who is funding each part of the cost, and in what form: savings, a loan, income, a sponsor.

  2. Check that form against the table above for each country you are considering.

  3. Ask two banks for their current education loan terms and document list.

  4. Gather the relationship, income and consent documents.

  5. Book a conversation with a counsellor before you sign any loan.

Frequently asked questions

Does an education loan count as proof of funds for a student visa? It depends on the country. Canada's IRCC page lists proof of a student or education loan from a bank. The UK accepts loans only from a government, a government-sponsored student loan company, or a regulated student loans scheme, and its guidance does not name commercial banks. For Australia we could not read the page listing accepted evidence, and Germany's list of routes does not include a loan, so confirm before you borrow.

Can my uncle or another relative sponsor my student visa? It depends on the country. Canada accepts a letter of financial support from a person, stating their occupation, relationship to you, dependants and the amount. Germany accepts a declaration of commitment from a person with sufficient assets or income. The UK's list names parents and partners, and Australia's income route names a spouse, partner or parent.

Can my parents' money be used for a UK student visa? Yes. The money must be in an account your parent controls, and you must provide their written consent and proof of the relationship. The 28-day rule applies, and the evidence must be from no more than 31 days before you apply.

Do I need a NOC for an education loan in Nepal? The NIC Asia and Nabil education loan pages both list a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Education among the documents for study abroad. Other banks may differ, so ask yours.

How much can I borrow for study abroad in Nepal? NIC Asia and Nabil both state loans of up to NPR 10 million, and NIC Asia's minimum is NPR 0.3 million. The amount you receive depends on your collateral. NIC Asia's page says up to 80 per cent of fair market value for real estate, or up to 90 per cent of a fixed deposit's principal.

The next step

The hardest part of a funding plan is not the arithmetic. It is knowing which of your family's sources each country will accept, and getting the documents to match before you sign a loan or move money.

Book a free profile review with Transit Education and bring your funding plan: who is paying, whether you are considering a loan, what land or savings are involved, and which countries you are comparing. Ask the counsellor to do three things: check each source of money against the current rules for each country, tell you which documents are missing or inconsistent, and say whether a loan fits your shortlist before you sign it. If the gap is documents, ask about the student visa service. If it is the country or course, ask about admissions counselling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Australia have a July intake?
Many Australian providers run a second-semester start around July or August, but not every course does. The course calendar decides, so check the specific program.
When can I apply for a UK student visa?
As early as 6 months before your course starts, if you apply from outside the UK. GOV.UK says a decision usually takes 3 weeks. Have your CAS, your funds evidence and a TB test certificate ready first.
How long does the Australian student visa take?
The Department gives targets for starting to process, not for the final decision: 1 to 4 weeks for Priority 1, 5 to 8 weeks for Priority 2 and 9 to 12 weeks for Priority 3 for applications lodged from outside Australia since 14 November 2025. It also publishes a processing time guide tool. Your priority depends on your provider.
Do I need a PAL to study in Canada?
Most applicants do. Master's and doctoral students at public designated learning institutions are exempt from 1 January 2026, and there are other exemptions. The PAL must be submitted with the permit application, and it must be from the current cap year.
